Close up of the bolt in an "cocked" state.

Close up of the bolt in the fired state.

The Bolt of the MG-34 actually locks directly with the barrel allowing the design of a "quick change" barrel system. You can see that the bolt head clears the receiver and the locking lugs on the bolt.

The wheels on the bolt head follow the "ramp" on the barrel locking the bolt at the time of firing.
